Some Facts about Social Media

  • Research shows that child accounts can be directly targeted with graphic content within as little as 24 hours of creating an online social media account.

  • IWF (Internet Watch Foundation) annual report shows the growing risk to children being targeted by criminal sex predators.

  • In 2020 the IWF confirmed 68,000 cases of self-generated imagery. This accounted for 44% of the imagery which the IWF acted against.

  • Analysis shows victims are girls aged 11 to 13 in 80% of these cases.

  • Most incidents occur at night; therefore it is good to keep mobile phones downstairs during the evening.
