Our Year 10 Eco GIFT team has been working passionately to respond to Pope Francis’ call in Laudato Si’ by transforming our school environment and deepening our community’s commitment to caring for our common home. Inspired by the themes of ecological conversion, stewardship, and sustainability, our project began with a bold vision: to turn our Science Garden and greenhouse into a vibrant, sustainable ecosystem that supports biodiversity, promotes wellbeing, and inspires action.

We started by clearing waste and preparing the ground, before planting native wildflowers to attract pollinators. The impact was almost immediate — bees, butterflies, and birds are now regularly spotted in the area, a visible sign that our garden is becoming a haven for local wildlife. Students involved in the project have reported feeling more connected to nature and are increasingly engaged in discussions about sustainability, not only in science but across subjects.

Future developments include adding bug hotels, bird feeders, a pond, herbs, vegetables, and educational signage to support outdoor learning. These features will help turn the garden into a permanent resource for biodiversity education and quiet reflection — encouraging pupils to slow down, be present in creation, and care more deeply for it.

Beyond the garden, our Eco GIFT team has also led the way in rethinking sustainability across the school. We’ve submitted proposals to school leadership suggesting practical steps to reduce waste, such as clearer recycling points, digital homework to cut down on paper use, and a shift towards double-sided printing. These ideas are already influencing wider school practice, with more staff and students joining conversations about how we can live out ‘Laudato Si’ in everyday decisions.

The success of this project has shown that small, purposeful actions can lead to lasting change. By taking responsibility for our shared environment, we’re helping to build a culture of care, community, and ecological awareness. The Science Garden is no longer just a space for plants — it’s a place of learning, reflection, and hope.

Through our efforts, we are proud to be living out the message of Laudato Si’, becoming stewards of creation and encouraging others to do the same. Together, we are planting the seeds of change — for our school, our local environment, and our common home.
