Information for parents
St Damian’s encourages all parents to take an active interest in what their child is doing on their mobile phone and online. Children are frequently directed to adult platforms through advertisements on popular apps such as; Kik, TikTok, Twitch etc. Therefore, we encourage parents to ensure that age restrictions on apps are used. Some apps require the user to be older than 16 but have no way of verifying their age. However, some apps offer different functionalities based on the age submitted by the user, for example, users under the age of 13 on TikTok will only be able to access a certain section of the app which has additional privacy features, and only displays clean videos. Without a robust age verification system, it remains important that parents take an ongoing interest in their child’s online activity.
