We were honoured to welcome Margaret Mizen MBE to St Damian’s RC Science College for a truly moving and inspiring. Margaret, co-founder of the Mizen Foundation, spoke powerfully to our students and staff about forgiveness, hope, and the importance of making positive choices.

Following the tragic loss of her son Jimmy, who was killed in an unprovoked attack in 2008, Margaret and her family responded not with hatred, but with a courageous commitment to peace and change. Through the Mizen Foundation, the family now works to build safer communities by engaging young people in conversations about choices, consequences, and the power of compassion.

During her visit, Margaret shared Jimmy’s story, on what would have been his birthday, with deep honesty and grace. Her message resonated strongly with our pupils, who were visibly moved by her strength and conviction. She challenged us all to think about how we can be a force for good in the world — in our words, our actions, and our daily interactions.

This visit formed part of our ongoing commitment to promoting a culture of kindness, respect, and reflection within our school community. We are incredibly grateful to Margaret for her time, her openness, and her enduring message of peace and hope.

As a Catholic school, we are inspired by her witness to Gospel values — especially forgiveness, reconciliation, and the dignity of every human life. Her visit will remain a powerful memory for our students and staff alike.
