The Elizabeth Jones MBE, LITERACY HUB was COMMENDED in the ‘School Building Award’ category at the Education Business Awards, 2023.  This category judges the most technically advanced building constructed for the purpose of teaching present and future pupils.

Recognising the importance of literacy within our school, our Governing Board agreed that investment should be directed to the creation of the Literacy Hub. Our new and innovative library and teaching space is an engaging and energetic environment which showcases our passion and drive in ensuring all pupils enjoy and have access to, this fully accessible, state-of-the-art literacy space.

Literacy is at the heart of all we do here at St Damian’s.  In essence, being literate is arguably the most important aspect of learning.  Literacy is fundamental to all areas of learning, as it unlock access to the wider curriculum.  Being literate increases opportunities for the individual in all aspects of life, it lays the foundations for lifelong learning and work.  Literacy is important because it has the power to improve and enhance lives professionally, economically, personally and spiritually.  As a high performing school, we ensure pupils have access to targeted literacy support especially for those pupils who struggle with reading.  This is done through comprehensive support packages offered by peer lead reading groups, senior leaders and teachers.

The Literacy Hub

‘The Elizabeth Jones MBE Literacy Hub’ is a purpose built, single storey building at the heart of the school, our ‘Hub’ will be a place of learning.  It includes a full-size classroom as well as a fully stocked library.  Our school librarian is on hand, before school, at breaktimes, lunchtimes and after school, assisting the bibliophile’s amongst us to choose the perfect book and lose themselves in a world of reading.  Intrigued to satisfy your thirst for knowledge?  Come and pay us a visit soon.

The School Librarian

Ms Toole, runs our Accelerated Reader programme for Years 7 and 8.  Pupils’ reading ages are tested and then they are given a ZPD level, which allows them to read at the correct level and also improve their vocabulary.  Mrs Toole also manages Sora, the Digital Library and can see how many books have been downloaded each week and how many minutes/hours that pupils have been reading.  There are plenty of opportunities for reading at St Damian's – please utilise them to support your son/daughter in their learning journey.
